BMH Volunteers Recognized For More Than 26,000 Hours of ServiceMay 27, 2004 - The Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Junior Auxiliary (Candystripers) were honored by the hospital during a May tea for donating 26,800 hours of service to the hospital this past year.
Comprised of 345 women, men and young adults, the groups were saluted during the annual tea at the Butler County Club on May 13. Volunteer of the Year award winners were also announced.
Receiving the 2004 award for Auxilian of the Year was Marcia Segraves of Saxonburg. The award for Candystriper of the Year was jointly presented to Anika Backstrom of Butler and Sarah Goetz of Portersville.
Segraves joined the Auxiliary in 1996 and has served more than 5,000 hours.
In 1999, when the Auxiliary President passed away suddenly in the middle of her term and the Vice President resigned, the Auxiliary was left without leadership. Segraves agreed to take on the Presidency and serve out the remaining one-year term and then stay on for another two years for her own term as President. This year’s honoree works two days every week in the Public Relations Office and three times a month as a cashier in the Hostess Shop. In addition, she often puts in extra hours conducting tours or serving on special projects and assignments. She serves on the board as Chairman of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations committee.
Backstrom, daughter of Dr. Jim and Susan Backstrom of Butler, has been a Candystriper for two years. She is a senior at Butler Area High School and plans to attend Thiel College where she will major in elementary education.
Goetz, daughter of Doug and Rosemary Goetz of Portersville, has been a Candystriper for three years. She is a senior at Slippery Rock Area High School and plans to attend Allegheny College where she will major in linguistics.
The BMH Auxiliary includes 313 women and men. A separate program for those in high school, the Candystripers, has 47 members. Auxilians and Candystripers can be found helping throughout the hospital, including at the front information desk, the Cherry Tree Gift Shop, the Hostess Shoppe, radiology, the print shop, medical records, in the Transitional Care Facility, the emergency department, the outpatient surgery family waiting area, and the intensive care waiting room.
Auxilians also knit caps for newborns, assist with filing and mailing, contact clergy at a patient=s request, operate the hostess cart, register and photograph new babies and help with community projects such as health fairs and screenings.
Those interested in joining the Auxiliary or Candystripers can contact Kim Reamer, Director of Volunteer Services at (724) 284-4342.
