BMH Diabetes Management Center Earns Recognition from the ADA

April 14, 2004 - The Diabetes Management Center at Butler Memorial Hospital was recently awarded a Certificate of Education Recognition from the American Diabetes Association. The ADA education recognition program has grown to become the leading quality assurance mechanism for diabetes self-management education programs across the country.

The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. These standards were developed and tested under auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994 and 2000.

Programs applying for recognition voluntarily submit to rigorous review process by experts in the field of diabetes who evaluate each program on it’s ability to provide patients with a comprehensive individualized education program.

“BMH adheres to the ADA process because it is the national standard that measures the quality of services provided,” says Margie McLaughlin, the administrator for the Diabetes Management Center at BMH. “This recognition helps consumers to know that the Diabetes Management Program at BMH is meeting these standards of quality.”

According to the ADA, there are 18.2 million people or 6.3% of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While and estimated 13 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.2 million people are not aware that they have this disease. Many people will first learn they have diabetes when they are treated for one of it’s life-threatening complications – heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and nerve disease and amputation.
