BMH Named One of the Best Hospitals in the Nation

May 26, 2004 - Butler Memorial Hospital finds itself in exclusive company, having been named on Monday to the 100 Top Hospitals list for 2003.

Solucient, a national healthcare information firm, analyzed Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data for 3,095 acute-care hospitals across the country as well as its own database compiled mostly from Medicare cost reports in determining its top 100 list.

Hospitals are named to the list based on an aggregate score derived from a range of clinical and financial measurements extracted from this data that is then compared against all other hospitals in the study. Specifically, the study examines:
  • Quality of care
  • Operational efficiency
  • Financial performance
  • Responsiveness to the community
Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president of Solucient's Center for Healthcare Improvement, which is responsible for the 100 Top Hospitals program, said that being named to the 100 Top Hospitals list takes a well-organized effort across the entire hospital.

“A hospital cannot win the award unless the board and administration, nursing, the medical staff, and hospital staff are in sync and moving toward a universal goal,” said Chenoweth. “A hospital that wins the award has an executive team that is superior at clear communication and, particularly, there is organization-wide communication of two goals – growth and performance improvement. Performance improvement is not focused on just quality of care or just cost effectiveness alone. In fact, in 100 Top Hospitals, they talk about improving both simultaneously. And then the board and CEO are instrumental in supporting the infrastructure to ensure achievement of those goals.”

The 100 Top Hospitals list is broken into five categories:
  • Major teaching hospitals
  • Teaching hospitals
  • Large community hospitals
  • Medium community hospitals
  • Small community hospitals
BMH is considered a medium community hospital for Solucient’s study.

The 11th edition of Solucient’s 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study appears in a special supplement to the May 24th edition of Modern Healthcare magazine.
