Classes for FamiliesThe following classes are provided by Butler Memorial Hospital's Education Department to help improve health knowledge.
Registration is required, and, for some classes, a nominal fee is charged.

Breastfeeding ClassBreastfeeding can help to develop a special bond between a mother and her baby. Most babies are ready to breastfeed within the first hour after birth. This class explores:- Breast preparation during pregnancy
- Use of breast pumps
- Helpful suggestions to support nursing for mothers who return to work
Infant MassageAll of us, even infants, enjoy the relaxing benefits of a massage. The special bond between parent and child is strengthened as baby learns to respond to this gentle touch that can:- Improve muscle tone
- Help regulate digestion
- Relieve some colic symptoms
- Promote improved sleep.
This course for parents and their babies consists of four one-hour sessions. A copy of Infant Massage: A Handbook for Loving Parents and an initial supply of massage oil are included.
Look Good...Feel Better
This program, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, is meant to help women undergoing cancer treatment learn to cope with the appearance-related side effects of treatment and regain a sense of self-confidence and control over their lives. "It's A Girl Thing"Moms and their 9- to 12-year-old daughters come together during this two-hour program to discuss changes that occur during puberty and to promote communication.
Lamaze ClassA six-week class in which expectant mothers and their coaches learn various methods to help them prepare for the birth of the baby. Topics include:- Signs of approaching labor
- Breathing techniques
- Relaxation skills
- Comfort management
- Medications
Course content follows Lamaze International curriculum guidelines. A tour of the maternity unit is included.
Parentingbasics.BabyBecoming a family brings much joy and frequent challenges. This three-hour class will help to prepare expectant parents for some of these adjustments. Topics include:- Family adjustments
- Newborn care (bathing, diapering, dressing)
- Crying and colic
- Infant safety
- When to call the pediatrician.
Expectant parents may attend this class any time prior to the baby's birth.
Sibling ClassNew babies bring not only joy and excitement, but they also bring many changes. Children ages three to six accompanied by a parent will participate in a fun, educational program that can help them adjust to the changes a new baby will bring to their family. Activities include practice holding and diapering a doll as well as a tour of the newborn nursery.
