Women's HeartAdvantage

The Women's HeartAdvantage program at Butler Memorial Hospital is designed to increase awareness among women of the risk factors for heart disease.

As part of the awareness campaign, BMH offered screenings throughout Butler County. The screenings included
  • A personal risk assessment
  • Blood pressure check
  • A height, weight, and body mass index
  • A pulse rate and regularity
  • A carotid bruits test
  • An ankle/brachial index for peripheral vascular disease and bone densitometry
  • A lipid profile (at most sites)

Responding to the Community's Needs

BMH initiated the Women's HeartAdvantage program in response to findings from the hospital's most recent community health assessment survey that shows women in the Butler County region are at an increased risk for heart disease.

In addition, most women think that cancer is their leading killer when, in fact, it's heart disease. Each year, nearly twice as many women die of cardiovascular disease as from all forms of cancer.

Findings from an additional survey conducted late last year of women in the BMH service area between the ages of 40 and 70 show that 56% identified a classic risk factor but did not perceive themselves to be at risk for heart disease.

Risk Factors Identified in Area Women

The classic risk factors these women identified were:
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • At least 20 pounds over their ideal weight
  • Smoking
  • Family history of heart attacks or heart disease
  • Estrogen deficiency
An additional 30% of women surveyed recognized that they were at risk for heart disease, meaning 85% of women in the survey are at risk for a first heart attack.
